Tax write-offs that REALTORS® are allowed to deduct can result in significant reductions in federal, state and social security tax liabilities. Learn about tax laws and their impact on the real estate industry. Former IRS agent and Certified Financial Planner Chris Bird will get you up-to-speed on how these changes affect you personally and your strategic tax planning. Bird has been in the financial business for over 30 years. He is an accountant and tax expert with 16 years’ experience with the Internal Revenue Service as a field agent, branch manager and training director. Bird was an adjunct instructor of tax law for the University of Illinois for over 20 years. He is a senior instructor for the Council of Residential Specialists and the Graduate REALTOR® Institute.

10:15 – 11:30 a.m. Pathway to Profit 

Get the formula for making a profit in the real estate business and how much you should really be spending on operating expenses. Gain practical understanding of the relationship between gross income, variable expenses, fixed expenses and profit. Real Estate Consultant Drexanne Evers will demonstrate a model company and explain the magic of “94 percent” in order to produce a satisfactory bottom line. Evers began her career in real estate more than 34 years ago and now owns her own consulting firm, Drexanne Evers International. She is a well-known lecturer and master instructor with the Council of Real Estate Brokerage Managers, teaching real estate management internationally. As a consultant she is responsible for analyzing and evaluating all firm’s functions and financial matters to help increase the bottom line. Evers received her MBA degree from Xavier University in Cincinnati.

Get an update on a wide array of topics including the recent changes in the license law and risk reduction. Gary Clayton, CEO of the Illinois Association of REALTORS® since 1987, is an official spokesman and lobbyist for the association. He serves as immediate past chair of the National Association of REALTORS® Association Executives Committee, member of the NAR Public Advocacy Advisory Group and vice chair of the REALTORS® Property Resource Advisory Board.

Steve Bochenek is chief legal counsel for IAR since 1983. He has been instrumental in the drafting of significant legislation impacting the real estate brokerage industry including the concepts of designated agency, statutory duties and the commercial broker’s lien. He will discuss transition issues, license law rules and risk reduction questions.
